Professional Boundaries in Nursing

Nurses have come a long way since the 19th century, and these days, they are required to have awareness and knowledge of how vital professionalism is. As a nurse, I know that I need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. During the working hours, I will be required to take decisions quickly in order to ensure the health and wellbeing of the patient. Sometimes a nurse comes across a lot of marital and other problems, but professionalism lies in her skills of managing both the personal and professional lives efficiently. According to the ANA Code of Ethics, a nurse should maintain dignity and serve patients in the best possible ways (2017). It made me understand that my decisions can impact patient care and the overall health care system, so I need to be careful in this regard.
During my time at the nursing school, I have been taught the fundamentals of patient care, and I am expected to demonstrate a high degree of dedication and altruism. I will have to sacrifice myself during my professional life and may have to work under pressure to ensure the provision of quality care to my patients. I have also learned that a nurse has to see patients of all races, colors, ages, backgrounds, and religions, which means there is no room for discrimination while working at the hospital. The job of a nurse is not only to see patients during the working hours but also to assist and support them morally whenever they are in need (Barnes, 2014).
According to Hilary Barnes, professional boundaries are one of the primary considerations in the relationship between a nurse and the patient. In a healthcare center, they represent the ethical, professional and legal standards a nurse has to maintain at any cost (Barnes, 2014, p. 138). It is the responsibility of a nurse to be honest with their duty and the patients while staying in their limits and not showing attitude to anyone. There are some standards and policies set by every hospital, and all medical professionals are to work according to them. Professional boundaries ensure that the requirements of patients are taken care of without any discrimination. Nurses have to establish limits and boundaries for themselves while performing their duties. For example, if the nurse is dealing with a patient in the emergency department, they need not get personal with the sufferer and must stay in the limits. At the same time, they should not allow any of the patients to talk anything out of context. Any behavior or action in the nurse-patient relationship that benefits the nurse or the client personally is the violation of rules and regulations. It is often referred to as the boundary violation and can result in the termination of the nurse (Azhagesan, 2017).
As a nurse, I know the worth of helping the ill in an uncertain situation, but sometimes, I am prevented from helping them or providing them with timely care. An incident took place the previous month when the dues of a patient were unpaid. The patient belonged to a backward area and had come to our hospital for cancer treatment. However, neither the patient nor their family could bear the costs of chemotherapy. In the beginning, they managed to pay for the treatment and the medications, but after some days, they started complaining about the fee of the doctor and the high prices of medicines. It was the time when my professionalism was being judged; I was confused about whether to help the patient or not. Finally, it was decided that the patient would be assisted privately, without any charges. They were asked to visit a clinic where I and a friend of mine, who is a doctor, see patients in the evening. I understand that it was a repercussion of a breach of professionalism (Murphy, 2014) and I was not supposed to call them to a private clinic; given the critical situation of the patient as well as their financial status, I took this decision, and there are no regrets since saving the life of a needy was more important to me than anything else.
After this incident, it was realized that nurses should focus more on their career and maintain the professionalism. The three simple ways I have opted for are taking care of the privacy of patients, being polite and courteous to everyone, and working extra hours without expecting a salary increment, whenever needed. First of all, patient privacy should be the priority of every healthcare professional. I feel that a nurse needs to follow the rules and regulations of the hospital in this regard. There is no need to share the case history reports with anyone, and they must abide by the privacy rules of the healthcare center. Secondly, I tend to be polite and courteous, keeping my personal issues aside. Even when the day is hectic, and nurses have a lot of patients to treat, they should never lose the temper. I strongly believe that it is one of the primary manners while interacting with anyone, whether he is a patient, doctor, supervisor or a peer. Finally, a nurse should not work for money (Başçı et al., 2016). As I move forward in my nursing career, I will be more than happy to spend hours in the hospital, assisting doctors in surgeries and operations, and helping patients recover from the disease at a fast speed.
In conclusion, nurses can open the doors of endless opportunities for themselves if they choose to stay professional and avoid reacting negatively to an uncertain situation. The success in the healthcare industry lies in how dedicated and hardworking nurses are. They are to serve the humanity, so they should learn how to practice with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity (2017).

Discussion

Part 1
As a general rule, familiarizing yourself with Google is easier than any other search engine. Plus, the search engine giant gives us access to plenty of scholarly articles and paid and unpaid books. That’s why most of the school, college, and university teachers ask their students to use Google to do research for their essays and research projects
Part 2
In order to find reliable academic sources, we can use databases like EBSCO Host and JSTOR, along with Google Scholar. These are an excellent way to collect data for our essays, assignments, thesis, and homework. Amazingly, Google Scholar has a link under every post to help the user find the most suitable scholarly and non-scholarly articles.
Part 3
Using peer-reviewed sources is important because they are easy to access and provide the most accurate and recent data. In case we do not use peer-reviewed sources, it becomes difficult for the teacher to access them and to verify the information provided in our academic papers.
Part 4
The first benefit of using peer-reviewed sources is that they help establish the validity of our research on the basis of knowledge shared by other researchers and scholars in the same field. Secondly, they make it easy for us to improve the quality of the papers based on the latest and advanced information.
Part 5
Sometimes it becomes necessary to use quotations and citations in the paper to make it look better. Quotes are used to support different arguments, and secondly, citations are must to be placed to avoid any plagiarism issue.
Part 6
The quote is the direct line or sentence copied from somewhere and its credit is given to the original author or writer. A summary is the short and comprehensive form of the entire essay that makes us understand the topic of discussion. The paraphrasing is done to prevent the paper from looking duplicated.
Part 7
Plagiarism is a serious academic theft, and its negative impacts on a student’s academic career need to be understood at every class level. When it comes to using sources in the college work, we should paraphrase the content to avoid plagiarism, and if quotes have been used, they should be properly cited.

Lead States in Public Health Quality Improvement

Various states decided to make innovative leaps towards implementing capacity and performance-based assessments as well as accreditation programs of their public health departments. The Lead States in Public Health Quality Improvement, also known as Multistate Learning Collaborative, is a great initiative that convenes four nations to study primary components of accreditation programs or state-based assessments carefully. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded this mega-budget project, while Public Health Leadership Society and National Network of Public Health Institutes have managed it (Kelemen & Sosík, 2015).
Given their recent interest in public health, the United States government wanted to initiate multiple projects and accreditation programs that could benefit humans and allow them to learn new things. The goal of this program is to provide people with sufficient health care facilities such as timely treatment, high-quality medicines, and world-class diagnosis. Four primary states have been asked to participate in this project and help people get rid of severe disorders as early as possible. Regardless of their background, religion, level of maturity, color and race, Americans will now receive free diagnosis and treatment facilities (Gounas, 2016).
Another goal of this program is to strengthen health departments so they can ensure the provision of quality medicines to the patients. Despite all the criticism and differences, critical elements, shared challenges, and common themes have emerged making people understand the importance of health. To foster the development of existing programs and assessments, four main states initiated social media campaigns and created awareness among the people regarding the effectiveness of governmental public health agencies. Arizona, for instance, is one of those primary states and has its own centralized public health system (Steven, 2006).
It might be difficult for the state to launch and maintain performance-based assessments while ensuring uniformity and authenticity. However, the Arizona Public Health System came forward to implement new health policies and conducted a number of surveys to get an idea of what people think about this initiative. A few years ago, Coconino County Health Department started examining public health competencies and eventually developed county-wide public health systems that could help evaluate the feasibility of the Multistate Learning Collaborative project. Chicago also participated in this program and later developed its own healthcare system using the MAPP models (Kelemen & Sosík, 2015).
These days, health departments have to deal with multiple issues that are classified into four main areas: increased costs of health services, dependence on tech gadgets and equipment, pressure on health departments to reduce prices and improve quality, and coming up the expectations of patients as well as satisfying their needs. That is teamwork, and no health department or organization can achieve the desired results alone. Thus, the Lead States in Public Health Quality Improvement is an incredible initiative that brings different nations together and decreases pressure on a single health organization to change the overall system (Gounas, 2016).
The key principals of this project are the obsession with quality, customer focus, long-term and short-term commitment, continual improvement system and scientific approach. Ordinary people will be educated in different states especially Arizona, and they will be taught how to get empowerment and courage to change their own lives. Patients depending on expensive medical treatments and pharmaceutical drugs will be provided with better health facilities, at reasonable or no costs. In short, this project has had a big impact on the overall healthcare system and is capable of bringing revolutions in medical sciences in coming months (Steven, 2006)

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

The health promotion and disease prevention model aims to create awareness among doctors, nurses and other staff members regarding how to promote health using different strategies and tactics and how to help patients prevent the minor to chronic diseases at a fast speed. On the other hand, the theoretical cognitive model aims to ensure cognitive health of patients admitted to different public and private sector hospitals across the United States. The various health promotion strategies focus on counseling, the support mechanism, and patient training. Examples of the health promotion and disease prevention model, as well as the theoretical cognitive model, are educating people regarding how to stay physically active, improve their eating habits, strengthen their mental capabilities and reduce their dependence on alcohol, tobacco and all forms of drugs (Windsor, 2015).
According to Peter D. Hurd and team, the healthcare promotion and disease prevention model is strongly associated with the theoretical cognitive model as the two models ensure the provision of quick care facilities. The Family Nurse Practitioner is one of those few medical professionals who play their role in strengthening the overall healthcare system. To accomplish their tasks, they undertake some research projects, encourage their coworkers to provide positive resources to patients and help people achieve their behavior specific changes. Throughout his/her life, a Family Nurse Practitioner uses a variety of tools to educate patients in a better way, and ensure the provision of timely care in case of an emergency. In addition, such practitioners help people improve their thoughts and perceptions and try to bring positivity in their lives (Hurd et al., 2018).
Every healthcare professional is responsible for helping patients prevent illnesses like cancer, HIV/AIDS, high blood pressure, diabetes, and others. Sometimes it becomes necessary to educate and train them regarding how to choose medications for themselves without seeking the help of a doctor. It is possible only when patients are involved in different training sessions while at the hospital. This training does not need to be provided in a classroom; instead, doctors and nurses can create awareness among patients by educating them individually. In such a situation, a Family Nurse Practitioner can come forward to promote health among multiple families and to help them prevent and cure disorders, especially the mental diseases (Windsor, 2015).
